What would a Jets game week be without a dose of Rex Ryan Bravado?
	 
With the Jets-Ravens season opener looming Monday night, Ryan today reacted to a comment made by Ravens fullback LeRon McClain, who said he’s happy the Jets finally signed Darrelle Revis.
	 
"I'm glad they got him, so there won’t be any excuses now," McClain told reporters in Baltimore.
	 
"I don't know what's wrong with LeRon," Ryan said. "He said something about there's no excuses ... He must have us confused with somebody else. I don't think we make any excuses. Last year, we didn't have our starting 11 guys on defense for a single game and yet we led the league.
	 
"We don't make excuses. All we do is produce ... and that's what we're planning to do Monday night."

The consensus among the Jets is that the Ravens are going to come after Revis in Monday night’s opener with hopes that he’s rusty.
	 
“I think they’re going to come at me,’’ Revis said. “I think Monday night the Ravens will come at me because I haven’t been in camp and I haven’t been playing football for awhile. I’m sure that’s in their game plan.
	 
Ryan and Revis’ teammates basically dared the Ravens, his former team, to come after Revis.
	 
“I can certainly see them going that,’’ Ryan said, displaying his patented sarcastic slant. “The guy missed all of training camp, so they should do that. Find him and go to him and go to him often.’’
	 
Ryan then switched off his sarcastic tone, saying, “They’re smarter than that. They’re not coming after him. No way. No chance’’

Today not only marked the return of Revis to practice but it, too, featured the return of veteran FB Tony Richardson, who was released on Sunday only to be re-signed Monday in a roster maneuver.
	 
Contrary to the belief that Richardson knew of the Jets plans all along, Richardson said, “Yes it definitely caught me off guard. There are no guarantees and certainties in this league. I had to let it play out.
	 
“I didn’t know I’d be back,’’ Richardson went on. “Mike (Tannenbaum, the GM) said, ‘Look at your opportunities and see what’s out there.
	 
“I called to Miami and talked to D (Dwayne) Wade and LeBron (James) to see if they needed some help down there and they were set, so I felt this was my best opportunity to win a championship,’’ Richardson quipped.
	 
Asked if it was upsetting to be cut, the first time it’s happened to him since 1994 in Dallas, Richardson said, “It wasn’t upsetting. It’s the nature of the NFL and NFL stands for ‘not for long.’ You try not to let things get to you.
	 
“I’m excited and happy to be back and get that feeling out of my gut,’’ he went on. “Obviously, we started something here back in March and I really wanted to be a part of it.’’

Brodney Pool, who’s rehabbing an injured ankle, again sat out practice, doing some running on the side. Pool said he’s hoping to return to practice Thursday or Friday. Ryan said he’s “not sure’’ when Pool will return. It looks at the moment like Eric Smith could end up starting against Baltimore.

Ryan said that he “wouldn’t be surprised’’ to see rookie CB Kyle Wilson returning punts now that he’s not starting at corner in place of Revis. When Wilson was starting, the Jets felt he had too much on his plate to return punts.
	 
Ryan sounded optimistic about the progress LB Calvin Pace is making after having surgery on his right foot, saying, “He’s way ahead of where most guys would be at this time.’’
	 
The Jets added RB Chauncey Washington, who had a strong preseason but was cut the other day, to their practice squad.
	 
The Jets players are off Wednesday and will practice Thursday through Saturday in preparation for the Ravens.

Teammates welcome 'Revis Christ' at Jets facility

Darrelle Revis, back from his 36-day contract holdout, received a hero's welcome from teammates today as he popped in on the tail end of practice this afternoon upon arriving to the team's Florham Park, N.J. training facility.
	 
Players intermittently cheered Revis, who signed his four-year, $48 million contract this afternoon, and they bowed to him, with several players referring to him as "Revis Christ.'
	 
Jets loquacious linebacker Bart Scott gave Revis the loudest business, saying, "Hell, I've waited two months for him. We gave him the 'Rudy' clap.''
	 
The Jets locker room was highly upbeat with the news of Revis' return. Many players said they felt the team is "whole'' again.
	 
“I had butterflies,’’ Revis said, describing those moments. “I didn’t know how my teammates were going to accept be because I hadn’t been here for a month. But after they started chanting my name and it was a good feeling to see the guys and wanting to be around them.
	 
“It was hurting me so bad not to be here, because I didn’t know how my teammates would accept me when I got back. I’m happy this is over with so I can play football again.’’
	 
RYAN MEETING SET UP DONE DEAL

Rex Ryan, who flew with owner Woody Johnson to Florida to talk with Revis this Labor Day weekend, gathered the players together after practice and delivered a message that essentially said, "It's all about us now. We have everything we need.''
	 
Revis called the visit from Ryan and Johnson, whom he’d never really sat and talked with before, “a breakthrough.’’
	 
“Rex was smiling like he took a trip to Disney World,’’ Revis said. “I was smiling, too. This experience humbled me, because I love to play football and it was something that was taken away from me that I love to do. I’ve never had anything taken away that I love to do.’’
	 
Ryan left little doubt whether or not Revis would be playing on Monday night against the Ravens.
	 
“I do think we may play Revis,’’ he said playfully. “I’m not sure. I think he might need to practice for several weeks before we play him, but don’t be shocked if he’s out there … in other words he’s definitely playing. I don’t see him coming off the field.’’
	 
Now the Jets have nothing but a Super Bowl on their minds.
	 
Right tackle Damien Woody said, "There are no excuses.''

 Johnson addressed reporters about the visit he and Rex Ryan made to Revis' South Florida home on Saturday.
	 
 "It was a group-think deal,'' Johnson said. "Rex and I said, 'Let's go down there. It's one thing we haven't tried yet.' We called and said, 'How would you like to meet?' We got (Revis' mother) and Sean (Gilbert, Revis' uncle) together and they said, 'Yeah, come on down and let's do it.' ''
	 
Johnson said after the meeting he "had a better feeling than when I went in. It wasn't complete confidence but it was 50-percent plus a point or two.''
	 
Asked what spurred the meeting and what transpired when they got there, Johnson said, "We stated the obvious. We'd never met with (Revis), the coach and I together. The season is upon us. The Ravens are the 13th, 7 o'clock, ESPN at our new stadium. That's a fact of life. There are plays to learn, getting in shape, so I think the schedule was one of the most compelling parts of it.
	 
 "I think Darrelle wanted to get back to playing football. get back and do what he does. The meeting was about three hours it seemed like about 20 minutes.
	 
 "I think the break-through if there was anyhitng it was probably last night (Sunday) when we achieved a little bit of momentum from when we went down Saturday. Last night we started getting down to brass tacks and what each party needs and what do we have to do to make the deal reasonably  good for us.''
	 
 Asked if he talked about the Super Bowl with Revis, Johnson said, "We talked about the Hall of Fame a lttle bit, about how important it is to keep on the right track. Hall of Fame and Darrelle Revis don't sound like they're a strange pair."

No one was more excited to see Darrelle Revis today with a new contract than Jets center Nick Mangold.

Mangold claims that Revis owes him a new car and he’s ready to collect.

“Two years ago at the Pro Bowl, (Revis) said, ‘If we make the Pro Bowl again next year I’ll buy you a car,’’ Mangold said today. “I said, ‘OK.’ We were both in Miami last year (at the Pro Bowl) and I said, ‘You owe me a new car.’ He said, ‘Yes, I know. But wait ‘til I get my new contract.’ I said, ‘All right. I’m a patient man.’ He now has a new contract.’’

Asked if a Hyundai was all right with him, Mangold said, “Hell no. With the amount of money he got I expect something very fancy.’

Mangold said he texted Revis this morning as soon as he heard the news of the new contract to remind him. “I got an ‘LOL’ back. I don’t know what that means. I thought it was ‘lots of love,’ so I figure I’ll get lots of love and a car.’’

The Jets today made their final cuts to get down to the required 53-man roster and none of them came as any surprise.
	 
In all, the Jets submitted 21 cuts, including S Emanuel Cook, FB Jason Davis, C Robby Felix, S Keith Fitzhugh, LB Ricky Foley, WRs Brooks Foster and Larry Taylor, T Dan Gay, LB Tim Knicky, DE Jason Lamb, LBs Boris Lee, Joshua Mauga, Cory Reamer, Brashton Satele, DBs Bo Smith, DLs Ty Steinkuhler and Martin Tevaseu, Gs Charlie Tanner, Chet Teofilo, T Michael Turkovich, S Donovan Warren.
	 
 The surprise survivors included RB Chancey Washington, who had a strong finish to the preseason, and TE Jeff Cumberland.
	 
Cumberland staying means the Jets are carrying four tight ends. Washington staying means the Jets have five running backs, including Danny Woodhead.
	 
Another surprise survivor was WR David Clowney, who the Jets hope will become a solid special teams player in the kick coverage game.

Though NFL teams aren’t required have their rosters pared down to 53 until 6 p.m. today, the Jets have already informed several hopefuls that their bubbles have burst.
	 
According to various sources, the Jets have cut their roster down to 59 players at the moment, making several cuts that were expected.
	 
Though the Jets haven’t made any official announcements, sources say they’ve cut WR/KR Larry Taylor, FB Jason Davis, LBs Josh Mauga, Brashton Satele, Boris Lee, Tim Knicky and recently-signed Ricky Foley, DTs Martin Tevaseu and Ty Steinkuhler, DE Jason Lamb, OLs Robby Felix and Chet Teofilo and safeties Donovan Warren, Keith Fitzhugh and Emanuel Cook, who had an INT Thursday night.
	 
The Jets must make six more cuts by 6 p.m. today to get down to the required 53. WR Santonio Holmes, who’s suspended for the first four games, does not count against the 53.
	 
It appears that WR David Clowney, who’s been criticized by the coaches for his inconsistency, is safe for now. The team hopes he can develop into a strong gunner on kick coverage because of his speed.
	 
Rookie TE Jeff Cumberland also appears safe, meaning the Jets will carry four TEs. Ryan has all but guaranteed that RB Danny Woodhead, despite the Jets’ loaded backfield, has made it.
	 
Among the toughest decisions remaining for Ryan is what to do with RB Chauncey Washington, who’s had a strong preseason _ much better than that of draft pick and fellow USC alum Joe McKnight. Ryan, though, admitted that he cannot cut McKnight because he’s a draft pick and because of his potential.
	 
CB Brian Jackson, who had a forced fumble and recovery against the Eagles, is also a player Ryan has wanted to emerge and is very much on the bubble entering today.
	 
Among the players most likely still to be cut include CB Bo Smith, LB Corey Reamer, T David Gay and WR Brooks Foster, though he made some nice special teams plays against the Eagles.
	 
Once the final cutdown is made, it's likely they'll try to bring back a couple players to the practice squad. Among those candidates include Tevaseu, a favorite of Ryan's.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday that outside linebacker Calvin Pace’s foot surgery went so well Pace could be back on the field by Week 2.
	 
Pace, the Jets’ sack leader last season, had the operation on his right foot Monday evening.
	 
Talking to reporters after practice, Ryan would only go so far as to rule Pace out for the season-opener Sept. 13 against the Ravens.
	 
"The doctors seem to think the surgery was really successful," Ryan said. "He's going to definitely miss the first week, but we'll see about the second week -- I'm not sure."
	 
If Pace makes a rapid return, it could dampen or curtail altogether
	 the Jets interest in signing former Patriots and Ravens pass rusher Adalius Thomas.
	 
Ryan said the Jets remain in “wait mode” with Thomas, in part because – as a vested veteran -- Thomas’ entire 2010 salary would be guaranteed if he is on a team’s roster in Week 1. The salary is not guaranteed if the vested veteran signs after Week 1.

Rex Ryan wasn’t kidding this week when he said backup quarterback Kellen Clemens had a pretty strong chance to make the Jets’ regular-season roster.
	 
It took a major pay cut on Clemens’ part to make it happen, though.
	 
The Jets assured Clemens of a Week 1 roster spot today by releasing another young quarterback, Kevin O’Connell, as part of Tuesday's mandatory cutdown to 75 players.
	 
"The only way Kellen Clemens was not going to be on this team was if somebody was going to give him a chance to be a starting quarterback, and I would have traded him … to give him that opportunity," Ryan told reporters after practice. "He was going to be on this football team. He was playing too well, too."
	 
Ryan was forced to amend that statement moments later when it was mentioned to him that Clemens had been told by the Jets the night before that he had to take a pay cut from his scheduled $1.176 million salary to remain with the team.
	 
Backtracking after that information was relayed, Ryan said: "Obviously, he'd [have been] cut if he didn't take it. [But] from his skill, we were not looking to cut Kellen."
	 
Clemens told reporters after practice that the ultimatum about a pay cut had come from Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum in a meeting Monday night.
	 
Because the Jets maintain that Mark Brunell is the top backup to Mark Sanchez, the team’s demand was in line with the thinking around the NFL that there was no way the Jets could pay a No. 3 quarterback more than $1 million.
	 
Clemens also revealed that the Jets had given him permission within the past two weeks to negotiate with other teams about a trade. Clemens decided to stick with the Jets at a lower salary.
	 
"This is where I wanted to play," Clemens said, indicating that the Jets told him he would be able to compete with Brunell for the No. 2 spot later in the season. "We have an understanding, I'm fine with it, and I'm excited to be here."
	 
As far as O'Connell, the Jets released the 2008 Patriots draft pick two days before the final preseason game because they had not yet begun to game plan for their Week 1 foe, Baltimore. The Jets feared that waiting much longer would allow the Ravens to sign O'Connell and pick his brain about the Jets, much as the Jets did with O'Connell last year before their early-season meeting with New England.
