Paynter spikes temperature, Travers at Saratoga in doubt

Paynter, the convincing winner of last Sunday's Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, spiked an elevated temperature on Tuesday morning and was held from his scheduled flight back to California.

The likely favorite for the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 25, may miss the race due to the setback, but will be sent by van to Saratoga by the end of this week. Baffert won't make any plans on the colt's future until he gets better

"We'll know in about five days," Baffert told the Post. "We're keeping our fingers crossed."

If Paynter does miss the Travers, Baffert said he could point him to the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on September 22 at Parx. Baffert will already be in attendance with his 3 year-old filly Eden's Moon, who is scheduled to run in the Del Mar Oaks, and if all goes well, the $1 million Cotillion Stakes on the Derby's undercard.

The Haskell was Paynter's first stakes victory and his first race since his second place finish to Union Rags in the Belmont Stakes on June 9.

Baffert will still be represented in the Travers with Liaison, the third place finisher in the Jim Dandy on Saturday.
