Call of Duty: Black Ops II sells $500M in first day of sales

Fans have answered the Call of Duty to the tune of half a billion dollars.

In a record-shattering performance, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Activision’s latest installment in the wildly-popular first-person shooter franchise sold $500M worth of games in a 24-hour span.

The previous record of $400M was set by 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

"With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row," Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc., said in a release

Fans attended over 16,000 midnight releases at retail outlets across the country.

"Call of Duty has become more than a product people buy, it's a brand people buy into. And every November we do more than just the launch of a game, we kick off an annual, unofficial but worldwide phenomenon called the Call of Duty season," Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, said.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo WiiU and PC.
