Rangers the second most valuable franchise in NHL: report

The Rangers are the second most valuable team in hockey, while the Islanders are close to the NHL’s cellar in terms of worth.

According to a Forbes report released Wednesday, the Rangers are worth $750 million, behind the Maple Leafs ($1 billion) and ahead of the Canadiens ($575 million) on the list.

The Islanders, who recently announced their move from Long Island to Brooklyn, are worth $155 million – the fourth worst among NHL franchises. The Devils come in at No. 19 ($205 million).

The disparity between the two teams speaks to the greater issue in the NHL. The top five teams in the league are worth, on average, $605 million. The five least valuable are worth an average of $145 million. The NHL is currently in the midst of a lockout due to a labor dispute between the owners and players association.

Rangers offseason acquisition Rick Nash is tied for the sixth most high paid player in the NHL ($8 million). Marian Gaborik is 11th ($7.65 million).
