'Slumdog' Sequel Also Gets Happy Ending

July 13, 2009 ι Jarett Wieselman

I was one of the people who experienced "Slumdog Millionaire" before the hype machine kicked into overdrive, making it not only one of 2008's best movies, but also one of 2008's most overexposed. But I have to say that the ensuing drama, starring child actors Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, has broken the heart that the film filled with smiley unicorns of happiness.

Reading allegations that Rubina's parents tried to sell her, which thankfully turned out to be false, or that Azharuddin's father beat him in front of film fans, which sadly turned out to be true, has been this flower's black petal -- isn't that the converse of a cloud's silver lining?

That's why I'm so happy to hear that "Slumsie" director Danny Boyle has finally taken matters into his own hands. In addition to the 500,000 pound trust fund he already established, it was announced at a press conference in Mumbai today that the film's producers have purchased an apartment for Azharuddin and are in process of finding Ali a suitable one since their homes were recently torn down.

Hopefully this is the end of the most depressing real life sequel a movie has ever had.
