Continuing in the grand tradition of actors choosing unexpected projects post-Oscar win -- Halle Berry, Hillary Swank, Charlize Theron -- Sean Penn has just signed on to star as Larry in "The Three Stooges."
I am pretty sure this will be Sean's first straight-up comedy since 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," although you could probably debate whether or not that movie could even be considered a full-on comedy.
Now, before you start yelling -- no! stop! don't! -- know that this "Stooges" endeavor is being directed by the Farrelly brothers, who obviously know their way around the genre. See: "There's Something About Mary," "Dumb & Dumber." Don't see: "Shallow Hal," Stuck on You."
It's also a super smart move for Sean since he's widely seen as a humorless ass, albeit an incredibly smart and talented humorless ass.
Sean is the first star to sign on for the film, which will just be a comedy in the Stooges' grand tradition, but Variety reports that MGM is in final negotiations with Jim Carrey to play Curly and Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.
So what do you think about this motley crew of Stooges?
