So, for all you folks who are tired of listening to Revlon-dyed tween bimbos singing about how much they liked kissing a girl, or rappers still letting us know how much money they have, in comes Chairlift. Marching straight outta Brooklyn, this trio of polymorphonic-casio-tone funk makes me want to scream from the Chrysler building, "I like pop music again, suckas!"
Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a silly little radio-tailored tune any day, but an entire record of real pop music is harder to find than Rosie O'Donnell in an ab class. Their new CD, "Does You Inspire You" is full of bass lines that feel like real bass lines, harmonies that resonate the way songs that came out of my sisters room in the early '80's did. It's honestly smart music. Tracks like "Evident Utensil" and "Planet Health" exist in their own black hole of thought and feeling, slowly melting into tunes that will be staples in your mellow-pop playlist.
Chairlift is made up of three members, Myspace says their names are simply Caroline, Aaron and Patrick. They originally formed in Boulder, Colo., in early 2006 to make live music for haunted houses, but like most haunted-house groups turned superstars, they moved to Brooklyn to pursue their dreams of art and intrigue. These three 20-somethings joined forces and voices to make a blip on the other-wise boring radar of pop. I mean, it's about bloody time, I was getting ready to fly my plane into the side of the Billboard charts in hopes of jostling up the order of things ... maybe hitting a few of those recycled pop-stars on the way, now, I don't have to.
