"Lost's" Dead Truth

July 13, 2009 ι Jarett Wieselman

After the season finale of "Lost," the Internet ran rife with speculation as to what Ben meant when he said everyone has to go back. People wondered if that meant people who escaped (like Walt) and people who died (like Boone) in addition to The Oceanic 6.

Well, Michael Emmerson spoke to E!'s Kristin on the eve of the Emmy's - and his Best Supporting Drama Actor win (fingers crossed!) - and threw in his two cents about the meaning behind that slightly ambiguous line.

"My sense is that those who escaped must go back," he said.

So clearly Walt must join the Oceanic 6 in returning to the lost-in-limbo island, but what does that mean for a character like Michael? Someone who was stranded on the island, then escaped and is now dead? Does death cancel out the trip back? Because if so that would be the first time not having a pulse prevented someone from returning to "Lost."
