Group Night Claims Its First Victim

July 13, 2009 ι Jarett Wieselman

Simon said it -- "forget the words, you're out!" -- but unfortunately early fave Emily Wynne-Hughes didn't listen and she was sent packing. While I'm sad to see her cut from the competition, I must admit: I wish every night was group night!

Is there any episode of "American Idol" that's packed with more emotions -- anger, love, jealousy, hatred -- or filled with as many unexpected moments? See, I fully expected Tatiana Del Toro to feud with her group, but to see her make it through? Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather.

My absolute favorite group performance was Danny Gokey's quartet. He most definitely benefited from his experience as a music teacher. But while Danny embraced the "one band, one sound" mentality, another star intentionally outshone his group. I could not take my ears off of Adam Lambert as he tore up his portion of the group song. This kid is destined for the main "Idol" stage -- I just hope he loses the guyliner en route.

Best moment of the night? Nancy Wilson, not from Heart, straight up negging a hug from groupmate Kristin McNamara. The cherry on this sundae was the big "f*** you!" Nancy hurled at Kristin on her way out. That, ladies and gentleman, is what group night is all about!
