The forecast called for celebutard with a chance of cocaine showers when Alex Dupre first blew into "One Tree Hill." A carbon-copy of the real-life twentysomething stars who party harder than they work, the actress-turned-model seemed ripe to rip the small town to smithereens.
But once viewers spent time with the girl behind the famous face, it was easy to see the flaws in first impressions -- thanks to Jana Kramer.
Jana sounds just like Alex: her bubbly and candid personality is confident and inviting, making it easy to understand that this is a girl who gets what she wants. But on screen, Alex wanted Julian, and when she didn't get him, she slit her wrists in a suicide attempt.
Shocking viewers during the final minutes of last week's episode, Alex's fate remains undecided as fans, including Jana, root for her survival.
PopWrap: Last week had quite the OMG ending with Alex bleeding out in a bathtub. Viewers are dying (no pun intended) to know, will Alex live?
Jana Kramer: You're going to have to watch and see!
PW: Sigh ... well, that suicide attempt was pretty graphic. What was it like to shoot?
Jana: Well, I'm actually terrified of the sight of blood -- even the sight of fake blood. So you were seeing raw emotion there.
PW: How many takes did you have to suffer through?
Jana: We had to shoot it five times for all the different angles.
Well I must say, bravo. Now, let's talk Alex. Do you like her as a person?
Jana: At first I thought she was just this ditsy, slutty girl, but now I'm in love with her! I think she's awesome. She has so many different levels and layers to peel away from. It's not that I don't do the research on her, but I let her be carefree and also I use my life, emotions and past stuff that I've dealt with, and everything like that.
PW: We love her too, but she definitely brings the crazy! Any real-life celebs you draw inspiration from?
Jana: Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan!
PW: Since Alex is a recovering addict, do you think her love for Julian is real, or is it just her next fix?
Jana: I think it's a little bit of both. But I honestly think that she loves him because he's the only person that has ever looked at her in a nonsexual way and actually wanted to help her and really believed in her -- and not have sex with her (laughs). If you have someone in your life that believes in you, you can easily fall in love with them, because they love you for yourself, and then you start loving yourself too.
PW: No matter the outcome, Alex's impact on Julian will be obvious to everyone when he's dealing with the aftermath in tonight's episode. How do you think Brooke will respond?
Jana: I think Julian's going to have a lot of regret with the things that he said to Alex. I know he probably had a reason to say them, but I think Julian and Brooke are going to need some time to go through what's going to come up in the next few episodes. They need a breather because everything is very powerful and intense.
PW: Recently Alex has been depressed and lonely, but she hasn't been using. Milly, on the other hand, is spiraling out of control. Is she headed toward the same dead end?
Jana: The great thing is I don't even know! I think she's going to feel awful with the things that she said to Alex because Alex was really becoming her friend, and Alex thought Milly was her friend. But since she's using, she's not really in the right frame of mind. I think the suicide's going to make a lot of people realize what's important and to get help and clean up. And I hope that she does because I love Lisa as a person and I love her character.
PW: Your resume includes TV hits such as "Friday Night Lights," "Entourage" and "90210." How is the "One Tree Hill" set different?
Jana: I definitely miss being in LA because that's where my home is, but I love "One Tree Hill." Even though Wilimngton, NC is a small town, we've all been such a really close family. I know it sounds really corny, but this is one of my favorite shows I've ever worked on because I feel like I'm a part of the family and everyone's really close and really gets along. And that's really, really nice.
PopWrap: Any real-life similarities to Alex?
Jana: I live with my boyfriend and we always read my lines together, and I was like, 'Honey, I have this audition for 'One Tree Hill,' can you help me read my lines?" After I got done reading, I was like, 'I cannot do this part! I am so not right for this. There's no way, I can't do this." My boyfriend looked at me and said, " You are perfect (laughs) for this role. Exactly how you read it, go in and do that." So I went in there and they were like, "That's amazing -- great!"
PopWrap: If we do have to say goodbye to Alex tonight, do you have any last words?
Jana: Rest in peace? (Laughs)
