Season after season, “The Bachelorette” and “The Bachelor” prove irresistible to anyone who delights in scantily clad singles plied with alcohol and deprived of dignity, clawing their way toward a hot body and a wedding ring.
Now, Yahoo! and Ben Stiller have released a new Web parody series that exquisitely nails those over-dramatic elimination rose ceremonies, the eternal “Can I borrow you for a second?” date stealing and the tears. . . oh, the tears.
With impressive star power (Jennifer Aniston, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman and Ken Jeong of “The Hangover”), “Burning Love” stars Ken Marino as Mark Orlando, a hunky firefighter looking for love.
“I know it’s absurd and outrageous, but I can’t help being swept up in it,” Marino says of the original “Bachelor” franchise, which he admits to watching with wife Erica Oyama, creator of the Web series. “They refer to everything as a journey. So on ‘Burning Love,’ that’s a really common thing. I keep saying, ‘Wow, what a journey! Your journey has been amazing! You’re really close to the end of this journey!’ ”
The parody, which posts new episodes on Mondays and Thursdays, is so pitch-perfect, it’s sometimes hard to distinguish the reality of this year’s season of “The Bachelorette” from the fictional world of “Burning Love.”
Here’s a head-to-head look at both.
