Mama’s summer vacation includes a break from the dramatic fare. She checks in with returning summer comedies this week:
“Aqua Teen Hunger Force” (Today, 11:59 p.m., Adult Swim) The “Aqua” gang launches its ninth season with yet another new title: “Aqua Something You Know Whatever,” after getting re-branded “Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1” last year (“Cougartown” could learn a thing or two about being too attached to a show title). But it’s still just a show about fast-food value meal components battling their neighbor Carl.
“Retired at 35” (Tuesday, 10 p.m., TV Land) Return — or don’t — to the retirement community for Season 2 of the laugh-track heavy Florida un-comedy. Parents Jessica Walter and George Segal should fire their agents for sticking them in this conventional, trite story about a 20-something who decides to ditch his career to move into his parents’ retirement community. The show gets all of its yuks out of geriatric sex humor like Viagra jokes and heart attacks in bed. If you want to see the wasted Walter shine, save your time and wait for “Archer” to return for another outrageously hilarious season later this year.
“Wilfred” (Thursday, 10 p.m., FX) This man-is-dog show wasn’t Mama’s top pick when it arrived last year, but its weird, sly humor was more interesting the rest of the summer laughers. When we fetch Ryan (Elijah Wood) in the second-season premiere, he’s checked into an insane asylum . . . or maybe a new job . . . or maybe he’s dead. Can’t really tell — but he’s still stressed about seeing dog Wilfred (Jason Gann) as a loutish stoner. Robin Williams joins the ever-expanding impressive list of guest stars in what turns out to be a very funny bit before Ryan returns to his “normal” life.
“Awkward.” (Thursday, 10:30 p.m., MTV) Which one will Jenna (Ashley Rickards) choose: Jake (Brett Davern) or Matty (Beau Mirchoff)? Mama can’t help it: She’s addicted to this “Sex and the City” wannabe for the high-school set. Sure, the endearingly confused Jenna chose good-guy Jake, but she will inevitably be tempted by bad-boy Matty, and their secret relationship promises to be revealed this year. But Mama’s equally interested in Jenna confronting her annoying mom (Lacey Hamilton) about the letter that no daughter should receive from her superficial mom or anyone else.
“Louie” (Thursday, 10:30 p.m., FX) Maybe it’s just her maternal instincts, but Mama always prefers the episodes where Louie hangs out with his two daughters. He’s still miserable, but he looks like he’d prefer to be miserable with these two comically gifted kids than any love interest.
