A former high-school wrestler put a would-be mugger in a fatal chokehold in Newark yesterday after the thug tried to rip off a cellphone from the ex-grappler’s friend, cops said.
Gian Davis, 30, was pronounced dead Saturday after he got into a tussle with two college students who refused to hand over spare change, cops said.
Davis then grabbed one of the student’s phones and put him into a headlock during the ensuing scuffle, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported.
That’s when the second student, a former high- school wrestler, grabbed Davis and put him in a headlock that was so tight that he choked to death.
The two students called police and remained at the scene.
They haven’t been charged and are coopering with authorities.
But Chief Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly said the incident may be presented to a grand jury.
Davis had prior arrests for aggravated assault and theft, according to the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
He was released from jail in July.
