WASHINGTON — Timothy Cardinal Dolan helped lead a national charge of lawsuits filed yesterday against the Obama administration for requiring Catholic employers to provide birth-control coverage in health plans.

“We have tried negotiation with the administration and legislation with the Congress — and we’ll keep at it — but there’s still no fix,” Dolan said.

The New York Archdiocese filed suit, asking a federal court in New York to strike down the rule.

More than 40 other Catholic dioceses and organizations are suing the federal government, saying that the rule is a violation of freedom of religion guaranteed by the First Amendment.

The legal action challenges an edict under the Obama health-care law that requires all health-care plans in the country to cover contraception.
