GREENSBORO, NC — Private moments between John Edwards and his baby mama, Rielle Hunter, will be presented during his tawdry federal trial, including intimate voice-mail messages between the two, according to court documents.
The jury can also expect images of plush hotels that Edwards used to hide Hunter during their affair on the 2008 presidential campaign trail — as Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer.
The hotels include the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara, Calif., the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego and the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, Florida.
Federal prosecutors say Edwards violated campaign-finance laws by using more than $1 million in political donations to conceal his tryst with Hunter.
Among other evidence that is expected to detail the alleged cover-up of Hunter’s pregnancy are 15 handwritten letters to Edwards from 101-year-old billionaire backer Bunny Mellon, medical records and e-mails between staffers and Edwards’ donors.
Opening arguments are scheduled for Monday.
The prosecutors’ list — totaling more than 700 items — also includes campaign videos of Edwards that Hunter filmed.
Also mentioned in the list is an e-mail that Hunter sent to an Edwards staffer about hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, who did not return a request for comment.
