He was the voice of Yankee Stadium -- but for years, Bob Sheppard also was the public-address announcer for Giants football and St. John's basketball.

Yesterday, Sheppard was remembered fondly by colleagues in those precincts.

"Bob Sheppard was the most distinguished and dignified voice in all of professional sports," said Giants president John Mara.

"We are very proud of the fact that he was the voice of the Giants for so many years. Bob was a true gentleman and the consummate professional. There will never be another one like him."

Said former Johnnies coach Lou Carnesecca: "Bob was truly one of the giants in the history of New York City sports."

Athletics Director Emeritus John W. "Jack" Kaiser said, "He was a true gentleman, a great teacher and a wonderful announcer. We will all miss him dearly."
