So when pneumatic reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her sisters, Kourtney and Khloe, swooped into Soho on the evening of November 3, locals dished out eye rolls aplenty as perky production assistants commandeered Spring Street and police erected a barricade around the glam Angelenos. It was the kind of fuss befitting an Obama-Ahmadinejad summit—not, you know, a boutique opening.
Inside the launch party for the Kardashians' New York store, Dash, the justification for all this mayhem, guests like brocialite Paul Johnson Calderone, famed for his turn on the CW's High Society, swirled around with Veuve Cliquot in hand. As the night progressed, the crowd circled closer to Kim—and the video camera lights that followed her every move—like moths to a flame.
Since their arrival in New York last month, the Kardashians, trailed by cameramen filming Kourtney & Kim Take New York, which debuts in January, have carpet-bombed the city with public appearances.
As Kim philosophized to Page Six Magazine at the launch of her namesake perfume at Macy's on October 27, "In these crowds, there is a moment when I look around and go, 'Wait, is all this for me?' "
