Beatniks, hippies, artists, musicians and writers are all historically linked with Greenwich Village -- though today the neighborhood might be most closely associated with New York University.
Over the years, Greenwich Village -- while still a stronghold of independent shops and restaurants -- has lost a bit of its bohemia. Today, Washington Square Park is undergoing a makeover that threatens its chess tables (boo) as well as the remaining drug dealers (yay). Also of concern is NYU's plan to add 6 million square feet of space; already, the surrounding blocks resemble a college campus more than a hip urban neighborhood.
Despite the prominence of NYU's purple flags, the area is still one of the city's most expensive. Lower Fifth Avenue, with its historic co-ops and townhouses, is often known as the "Gold Coast." With much of the area designated a historic district, new construction in the heart of the Village has been minimal.
Though to quote former Village denizen Bob Dylan: The times, they are a-changin'. Plans to build a 21-story residential tower at the site of St. Vincent's hospital could bring some 400 residences to the 'hood.
