The projected cost of a new police academy in Queens has risen to $1.5 billion, up $500 million from the original estimate.
The staggering increase was revealed last week in a request for proposals from contractors to oversee the construction of the new state-of-the-art NYPD training campus in College Point.
"The higher amount is not a result of cost overruns," said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. "The billion-dollar figure was used as a place-holder. We knew it would be higher and indicated so earlier in the Police Academy Site Selection Committee Report."
