TEEN BEATEN IN B'KLYN CELL

By PHILIP MESSING

May 25, 2008

A teen was clinging to life last night after he was pummeled during a fight in a crowded Brooklyn jail, sources said.

The 16-year-old, whose name was not released, suffered possible brain injuries as a result of the yesterday's dustup inside a Brooklyn Criminal Court holding cell, where he had been waiting to see a judge for about nine hours, the sources said.

The victim was awaiting an arraignment hearing on a charge of criminal trespassing after being picked up Friday in East New York.

Shortly after 9 a.m., he began to fight with at least three of other detainees and was slammed into the holding cell wall.

He was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition, and court was shut down for hours while detectives investigated.

Three suspects were being questioned at the 84th Precinct station house last night and each was expected to be charged in connection with the attack, the sources said.

Police did not provide a motive, but one source said it may have been gang related, terming it "a possible Crips and Bloods thing."
