Roman soccer fans went into a frenzy yesterday after learning from The Post that prominent New York lawyer Joseph Tacopina is poised to buy the famed team AS Roma with the backing of financier George Soros.
Headlines on the Web sites of Italy's big newspapers cited The Post's scoop, fan blogs erupted and radio talk shows were swamped with callers chattering about the stunning news, particularly after news accounts recently said Soros had abandoned the deal.
Tacopina is due to arrive in Rome today and is expected to sign the deal to buy Roma's controlling shares within days, barring last-minute snags.
But AS Roma cautioned: "No deal has been reached."
