TEENS CHARGED IN CROWN HEIGHTS BEATING

By STEFANIE COHEN

June 6, 2008

Two black teens were indicted yesterday for assaulting and robbing an Orthodox Jewish boy as he rode his bicycle in Brooklyn.

Namor Clarke, 17, and Basean Parker, 15, allegedly attacked Alon Sherman as he biked down Albany Avenue in Crown Heights to buy formula for his baby brother.

The pair beat Sherman, 16, so badly that his jaw had to be wired shut, according to the Brooklyn DA's Office.

The teens are not being charged with a hate crime. If convicted, they face a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Some neighborhood residents believe the beating was retaliation for an earlier attack by two Orthodox Jews on 20-year-old Andrew Charles. In April, Charles was sprayed with mace and hit with a nightstick.
