CYCLONES ALL BUSINESS

By BRIAN LEWIS

June 18, 2008

Mets first-round pick Reese Havens and supplemental pick Brad Holt flew to New York last Thursday, and met Willie Randolph while working out Saturday at Shea Stadium. They woke up yesterday morning to find Randolph unceremoniously fired in the middle of the night.

Welcome to the bigs, guys. Welcome to New York.

"(I met Randolph) just for a brief second. We got introduced to him and the coaches; we didn't spend much time with them, just said hi," Holt said before his Cyclones' 3-1 season-opening win last night vs. the Staten Island Yankees at KeySpan Park.

"That's in the big leagues. I'm just now getting started; I'm in the minors. All I'm worried about is playing for the Cyclones."

Manager Edgar Alfonzo, who won two division titles and a NYPL championship in his two years in Brooklyn, was asked jokingly about his own job status. "Today I'm here. I want to win here. Me and (GM) Steve Cohen are fine; we don't have problems. I'm just trying to get my team together," Alfonzo said with a laugh.

Havens, who hit .359 with 18 homers for South Carolina as a shortstop, had no opinion on the Randolph firing.

"Not really. Since I've been here, I've been with the Cyclones, been around the Cyclones clubhouse, getting ready for opening night against the Yankees," said Havens. "I've really just been focusing in on that."
