MAC'S $300M CAR PRIZE

By CARL CAMPANILE

June 24, 2008

John McCain yesterday offered a $300 million prize to anyone who can manufacture a battery-charged car that would reduce the United States' reliance on foreign oil.

"This is one dollar for every man, woman and child in the US, a small price to pay for helping to break the back of our oil dependency," the GOP presidential candidate said of the government-funded prize at a town-hall meeting in Fresno, Calif.

With gas at a record $4 a gallon, McCain and Democratic rival Barack Obama are competing to show voters they're addressing the energy crisis.

But Obama economic adviser Jason Furman said McCain has repeatedly "stood in the way of people like Sen. Obama, who have been trying to improve our energy security."
