A cop shot and killed a knife-wielding man who lunged at him in an Upper East Side building last night, authorities said.
The violence erupted at 11:24 p.m. on the second floor of 321 E. 83rd St.
The officer had been flagged down after reports of a fight between a man and woman, a source said.
When he got to the second-floor hallway, the cop confronted a man, clad only in his boxers, waving a knife.
The 39-year-old man lunged toward the cop, who opened fire, hitting him in the chest, the source said.
"I was sitting out back and I heard what I thought was a gunshot," said one resident. "When I came out front, I said, 'Oh, my God, it was a gunshot!' It was not a pleasant feeling."
The man was pronounced dead at New York Hospital at 11:41 p.m., the source said.
