ONE GEM OF A GARBAGE HAUL FOR SI COUPLE

The city's trash was this man's treasure.

A Staten Island jeweler found his wife's $20,000 diamond earrings, which had been inadvertently tossed in the trash, after digging through a mound of garbage at the Fresh Kills landfill.

Haya Sharon, 56, dropped the three-carat gems, an anniversary present from her husband, Arie, into a jar of cleaning solution at their New Dorp store, Kukulina Jewels, last Saturday. A staffer, thinking it was empty, then tossed the opaque jar into the trash.

When the couple realized Tuesday what must have happened, they turned to the Sanitation Department. The truck that contained their pickup wasn't located until a day later. Luckily, it hadn't been off loaded.

The Sharons went digging.

"It smelled so bad, but we went through everything." Arie, 61, told The Post last night.

And after a half-hour of the nauseating work, they found the diamonds.

"I was amazed," Arie said. "My wife was jumping. For five minutes, I was the king."
