RUDY DUO QUITS GOP TEAM

Two Senate Republican committee staffers with ties to Rudy Giuliani quit yesterday amid a brewing GOP war over the demotion of a top operative close to the ex-mayor.

Operatives Matt Coleman and Phil Frattaroli left the Senate Republican Campaign Committee yesterday, sources said.

The moves came the same day The Post reported that $30,000-a-month Executive Director Matt Mahoney was effectively demoted after critics decided he was more focused on Giuliani's interests than in keeping the GOP's one-seat Senate majority.

Coleman and Frattaroli, who were both brought in by Mahoney, could not be reached for comment. Sources said they quit after being sent out to work in the field for distant campaign work, and they argued it wasn't what they were hired to do.

An operative had told The Post Mahoney wasn't aware of what was happening around the state.

Mahoney was brought in by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos' now-departed predecessor, former Sen. Joe Bruno, who had close ties to Giuliani.
