WHEN it came to exposing people to new artists, radio used to be the only gig in town. Those days are long gone, and television has taken over that role. We asked music supervisors on three of our favorite New York-themed TV series to give us a preview of the soon-to-be-hot new acts (and a surprising old one!) that you'll be hearing from soon.
Here's what they had to say:
CSI: NY
Premieres Sept. 24 on CBS at 10 p.m.
The procedural drama is one of the few shows that tends to veer toward up-tempo electronic music. "The show makes lots of swift cuts. Fast music helps facilitate that," says music supervisor Jason Alexander. Plus, it's a good reflection of New York: "It's loud, heavy, gritty and dirty." The season kicks off with a bang, featuring a Nas song and on-camera performances by established act Maroon 5 and a cameo by Nelly, but also delves into uncharted territories.
This season, you'll (probably) hear:
The Ting Tings, CSS, Adam Freeland
Alexander hasn't finalized which tracks are going to be used - "CSI: NY" adds music a week before air date so they can use the most up-to-date tracks - but he feels strongly about these up-and-coming artists. "All of them have a frenetic, urban rock sound, with a sense of immediacy," he says. "They're very stylish, do a lot of programming and use real instruments, so they're refreshing and exciting, almost like punk bands doing electronic."
