TENNIS: U.S. stays alive in Davis Cup
The United States won the doubles match yesterday to trail Spain 2-1 in the Davis Cup semifinals in Madrid, Spain.
Mike Bryan and Mardy Fish rallied to defeat Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on clay to give the U.S. its first point.
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal can clinch Spain's sixth final appearance by defeating Andy Roddick in reverse singles today. The winning team will face either Argentina or Russia.
* Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina cruised into the final of the Pan Pacific Open with straight-set victories in Tokyo.
GOLF: MacKenzie melts down on 18th
In Madison, Miss., Will MacKenzie shot 8 on the par-5 18th, losing three shots, to give the Viking Classic lead back to Mark Turnesa.
* In Tulsa, Okla., U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion Joan Higgins and Noreen Mohler shot even-par 71s to share the first-round lead in stroke-play qualifying for the USGA Senior Women's Amateur at Tulsa Country Club.
* In Fort Worth, Texas, Howie Knodt shot a 3-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of stroke-play qualifying in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship at Shady Oaks Country Club.
NHL: Sabres extend GM
Sabres general manager Darcy Regier was given a two-year contract extension.
NFL: Steelers release RB Russell
The Steelers added rookie LB Patrick Bailey to their roster and released second-year running back Gary Russell.
NASCAR: Busch races to 8th Nationwide win
In Dover, Del., Kyle Busch made it eight victories this season in the Nationwide Series, leading 157 laps and absolutely dominating to win in a green-white-checkered flag finish at Dover International Speedway.
CYCLING: Voigt wins Tour de Pologne
In Warsaw, Poland, Jens Voigt of Germany won the Tour de Pologne.
