JOSEPH O'Neill, author of the acclaimed novel "Nether land," needed a head-shrinker to become a writer. Turkish-born O'Neill told stu dents at the Writing Center of Marymount Manhattan College he was practicing law in London when, 10 years ago, he got the urge to try fiction. But fearing the loss of a safe income, he sought out a shrink. "What do you re ally want to do?" the psychiatrist asked. "Go to the US and write," responded O'Neill. "There you are!" the doc shot back.
